Wednesday Morning Musicale

WEDNESDAY MORNING MUSICALE

Founded by Miss Eva Clare, the Wednesday Morning Musicale held its first meeting on March 31, 1933 in the MacDonald Room of Hotel Fort Garry.  The first concert presented on October 11, 1933, featured a Johannes Brahms’ Sonata for Violin and Piano.

Over the years, Wednesday Morning Musicale carried out its objectives:

  • to provide a forum of listeners and performers for the enjoyment and study of music;
  • to encourage young artists through the awarding of scholarships;
  • to present Manitoba artists in recital;
  • to present original compositions by Manitoba composers.

Concert venues included private homes, churches, schools and other buildings.  Many of these were followed by coffee parties and luncheons.

In addition to performances by soloists, ensembles and choirs, the Wednesday Morning Musicale sponsored several musical productions.  Many new compositions were ‘premiered’ at Wednesday Morning Musicale concerts.  During World War II, the club made charitable donations to many social causes, such as various Red Cross War Relief Funds, War Services, and the Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board.

Over its 75 year history, the Wednesday Morning Musicale awarded over $66,000.00 in scholarships to individuals and groups.  Donations for the scholarships came from members and other interested persons, supplemented in later years, by interest earned on the club’s Winnipeg Foundation held Scholarship Fund.

The final Wednesday Morning Musicale concert, held in the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Muriel Richardson Auditorium on October 8th, 2008 included a Johannes Brahms’ Sonata for Violin and Piano, as did the first concert - 75 years earlier.  The members and guests enjoyed a final luncheon, where many memories were shared.

Following formal dissolution of the Wednesday Morning Musicale, the remaining funds and assets of the club were transferred to the Winnipeg Music Festival, where scholarships and awards, bearing the club’s name, will be awarded annually, continuing the Wednesday Morning Musicale’s mandate to provide scholarships to promising young musicians.
