Trophy Rules and Regulations

TROPHY RULES AND REGULATIONS

 

All shields and trophies are the property of the Festival. Trophy winners will receive a plaque to retain as a permanent record of their achievement and their names will be engraved on the original trophy or shield. Competitive trophies are presented following a competition and are designated by an asterisk (*) following the trophy name. Winners of awarded trophies will be notified regarding presentation following the conclusion of eligible class(es). In addition to the following rules, please see individual trophy descriptions.

COMPETITIVE TROPHY RULES

1.     Recipients of instrumental competitive trophies are not eligible to enter classes at the same grade in succeeding Festivals unless competing in a class requiring performance on a different instrument to that previously used. Recipients of 8 and 10 years of age & under, and recipients of 12 and 14 years of age and under vocal competitive trophies may enter classes leading to, and may potentially win the same trophy in succeeding Festivals, provided they enter classes at the next age level. Recipients of the Gilbert & Sullivan Society and the Rainbow Stage competitive trophies may enter classes, at the same or at a higher grade, leading to competition for, and potentially winning the same trophy in succeeding Festivals.

2.     A minimum mark of 87 or achievement of a silver level is required for entrance into all trophy competitions.

3.     A participant who has qualified by securing first place in more than one eligible class may compete only once and must elect which of the eligible classes he or she represents. A participant may perform more than once in a trophy class if they are performing on instruments from different disciplines.

4.     To be eligible for trophy competitions, participants must be recommended from at least one trophy eligible class and enter and perform in one additional solo class with the same instrument.

5.     For all trophy competitions, participants must provide original music for the use of the adjudicator.

6.     The adjudicator will announce the winner and runner(s)-up only. No marks will be awarded.

AWARDED TROPHY RULES

1.     Recipients of awarded trophies are eligible for the same award in subsequent festivals.

2.     A minimum mark of 87 or achievement of a silver level is required for eligibility.

VOCAL TROPHIES

PARTICIPANTS IN VOCAL CLASSES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR:

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance, solo or group, during the Festival, as selected by the adjudicators. This trophy is presented at the Gala Concert.

KOZUB TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance by a vocal/instrumental group, family and/or friends, in class 1945, as selected by the adjudicator(s).

GILBERT & SULLIVAN SOCIETY TROPHY*
This class is confined to winners in classes 1258A, 1258B, 1308A, 1308B, 1358A, 1358B, 1408A, 1408B, 1458A, 1458B, 1958A, and 1958B. Participants are required to perform only the piece with which they won the class they are representing.

RAINBOW STAGE TROPHY*
This class is confined to winners in classes 1207A, 1207B, 1207C, 1207D, 1207E, 1207F, 1257A, 1257B, 1257C, 1257D, 1307A, 1307B, 1307C, 1307D, 1357A, 1357B, 1357C, 1357D, 1407A, 1407B, 1407C, 1407D, 1457A, 1457B, 1457C, 1457D, 1957A, 1957B, 1957C, and 1957D. Participants are required to perform only the piece with which they won the class they are representing.

GORDON HIGNELL MEMORIAL TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance in a Vocal Group Class, in classes 1571, 1581, 1591, 1601, 1611, 1621, 1631, 1641, 1651, 1661, 1671, 1681, 1691, 1701, 1711, 1721, 1731, 1741, 1751, 1761, 1771, 1781, 1791, 1801, 1811, 1821, 1831, 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1971, 1981 and 1991, as selected by the adjudicator.

8 AND 10 YEARS & UNDER

FRANCES E. WICKBERG TROPHY*
This class is confined to girls, 8 & 10 years and under, by invitation of the adjudicator from classes 1051A, 1052A, 1052C, 1053A, 1054A, 1101A, 1102A, 1102C, 1103A and 1104A. Participants are required to perform only the piece requested by the adjudicator.

STEWART M. THOMSON TROPHY*
This class is confined to boys, unchanged voices, 8 & 10 years and under, by invitation of the adjudicator from classes 1051B, 1052B, 1052D, 1053B, 1054B, 1101B, 1102B, 1102D, 1103B and 1104B. Participants are required to perform only the piece requested by the adjudicator.

12 AND 14 YEARS & UNDER

LADIES’ ORANGE BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION TROPHY*
This class is confined to girls, 12 & 14 years and under, by invitation of the adjudicator from classes 1151A, 1152A, 1152D, 1154A, 1155A, 1201A, 1202A, 1203A, 1204A, 1205A, 1206A, 1206D, 1221A and 1222A. Participants are required to perform only the piece requested by the adjudicator.

HAROLD L. SCARTH MEMORIAL TROPHY*
This class is confined to boys with unchanged voices, 12 & 14 years and under, by invitation of the adjudicator from classes 1151B, 1152B, 1152E, 1154B, 1155B, 1201B, 1202B, 1203B, 1204B, 1205B, 1206B, 1206E, 1221B and 1222B. Participants are required to perform only the piece requested by the adjudicator.

WINNIPEG MALE CHORUS TROPHY*
This class is confined to boys with changed voices, 12 & 14 years and under, by invitation of the adjudicator from classes 1151C, 1152C, 1152F, 1154C, 1155C, 1201C, 1202C, 1203C, 1204C, 1205C, 1206C, 1206F, 1221C and 1222C. Participants are required to perform only the piece requested by the adjudicator.

16 YEARS & UNDER

W.H. ANDERSON MEMORIAL TROPHY*
This class is confined to vocalists 16 years and under, winners in classes 1251A, 1251B, 1252A, 1252B, 1253A, 1253B, 1254A, 1254B, 1255A, 1255B, 1256A, 1256B, 1271A, 1271B, 1272A and 1272B. Participants are required to perform the piece with which they won the class they are representing and their own choice of a contrasting selection of a different nature. Musical Theatre and Gilbert & Sullivan selections as well as popular songs will not be permitted as contrasting selections.

18 YEARS AND UNDER

ALMA WYNNE MEMORIAL TROPHY*
This class is confined to vocalists 18 years and under, winners in classes 1301A, 1301B, 1302A, 1302B, 1303A, 1303B, 1304A, 1304B, 1305A, 1305B, 1306A, 1306B, 1321A, 1321B, 1322A and 1322B. Participants are required to perform the piece with which they won the class they are representing and their own choice of a contrasting selection of a different nature. Musical Theatre and Gilbert & Sullivan selections as well as popular songs will not be permitted as contrasting selections.

GRADE C

JAMES SEATON TROPHY*
This class is confined to Grade C vocalists, winners in classes 1951A, 1951B, 1952A, 1952B, 1953A, 1953B, 1954A, 1954B, 1955A, 1955B, 1956A, 1956B, 1959A, 1959B, 1960A and 1960B. Participants are required to perform the piece with which they won the class they are representing and their own choice of a contrasting selection of a different nature. Musical Theatre and Gilbert & Sullivan selections as well as popular songs will not be permitted as contrasting selections.

GRADE B

TUDOR BOWL*
This class is confined to Grade B vocalists, who are winners in classes 1351A, 1351B, 1352A, 1352B, 1353A, 1353B, 1354A, 1354B, 1355A, 1355B, 1356A, 1356B, 1372A and 1372B. Participants are required to perform the piece with which they won the class they are representing and their own choice of a contrasting selection of a different nature. Musical Theatre and Gilbert & Sullivan selections as well as popular songs will not be permitted as contrasting selections. Time limit 8 minutes.

ALICE F. “LAL” MILLS MEMORIAL TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance of a Folk Song by a Grade B vocalist in classes 1376A and 1376B, as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Tudor Bowl competition.

RICHARD W. COOKE TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance of a Sacred Selection by a Grade B vocalist in classes 1372A and 1372B, as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Tudor Bowl competition.

GRADE A

ROSE BOWL*
This class is confined to Grade A vocalists, who are winners in classes 1401A, 1401B, 1402A, 1402B, 1403A, 1403B, 1404A, 1404B, 1405A, 1405B, 1406A, 1406B, 1421, 1423A, 1423B, 1424A, 1424B, 1425A and 1425B. Participants are required to perform the piece with which they won the class they are representing. The second selection must be in another language and must not have been sung by the participant in the current festival. Musical Theatre and Gilbert & Sullivan selections as well as popular songs will not be permitted as contrasting selections. Time limit 10 minutes.

HERBERT AND AUDREY BELYEA TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance of German Lieder, Italian Art Song, French Mélodie, Spanish Art Song and English Art Song in classes 1401A, 1401B, 1402A, 1402B, 1403A, 1403B, 1404A, 1404B, 1405A and 1405B as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Rose Bowl competition.

GRADE A/HONOURS

DORIS (MILLS) LEWIS MEMORIAL TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance of an Oratorio Aria or J.S. Bach Aria by a Grade A or Honours Level vocalist in classes 1423A, 1423B, 1424A, 1424B, 1473A, 1473B, 1474A and 1474B, as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Rose Bowl competition.

REG HUGO MEMORIAL TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance of an Opera Aria by a Grade A or Honours Level vocalist in classes 1425A, 1425B, 1475A and 1475B, as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Rose Bowl competition.

INSTRUMENTAL TROPHIES

PARTICIPANTS IN INSTRUMENTAL CLASSES ARE ELIGIBLE FOR:

LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance, solo or group, during the Festival, as selected by the adjudicators. This trophy is presented at the Gala Concert.

KOZUB TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance by a vocal/instrumental group, family and/or friends, in class 1945, as selected by the adjudicator(s).

WINNIPEG CLASSICAL GUITAR SOCIETY DAVID BELLAN TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance by a school guitar ensemble or orchestra, as selected by the adjudicator. Upon request, this trophy will be presented at a school assembly or concert.

MANITOBA GUILD OF ENGLISH HANDBELL RINGERS TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding Handbell performance, solo or group, in classes 8641, 8642, 8643, 8644, 8651, 8652, 8653, 8654, 8661, 8662, 8663, 8664, 8671, 8672, 8673, 8674, 8681, 8682, 8683 and 8684, as selected by the adjudicator.

ROYAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC ALUMNI ASSOCIATION WINNIPEG CHAPTER TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding solo Piano performance, Grade/Level 9 to Honours, as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Aikins Memorial Trophy competition.

JOHN MELNYK TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance in a Piano Concerto Class, Grade/Level 8 to Honours, in classes 2421, 2471, 2521, 2571 and 2621, as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Aikins Memorial Trophy competition.

JEAN BROADFOOT TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance in a Piano Sonata Class, Grade/Level 9 to Honours, in classes 2452, 2455, 2458, 2502, 2505, 2508, 2552, 2555, 2558, 2602, 2605, and 2608, as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Aikins Memorial Trophy competition.

CLARE C. LECKIE TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding performance in a Piano Group Class, in classes 2701, 2702, 2703, 2704, 2705, 2706, 2707, 2708, 2721, 2722, 2723, 2724, 2741, 2742, 2743, 2744, 2761, 2762, 2763 and 2764.

VICTOR FELDBRILL TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding solo String performance, Grade/Level 9 to Honours, as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Aikins Memorial Trophy competition.

WINNIPEG BACH FESTIVAL TROPHY
Award for the most outstanding solo performance of a J.S. Bach composition by a String performer, Grade/Level 9 to Honours, in classes 3162, 3182, 3202, 3222, 3362, 3382, 3402, 3422, 3562, 3582, 3602, 3622, 3762, 3782, 3802 and 3822 as selected by the adjudicator. This trophy is presented at the Aikins Memorial Trophy competition.
