NATIONAL SOLO AND CHAMBER CLASSES

(N)CLASS 0001 NATIONAL VOCAL SOLO CLASS, 
GRADE A/HONOURS
Own choice, one selection from an opera, with recitative where applicable, original key, language optional OR one sacred aria from an oratorio, a work of J.S. Bach or other major sacred work, with recitative where applicable, original key, language optional. Aria and recitative, when applicable, are to be named on the entry form. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations. This is the only vocal class eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial level.

(N)CLASS 0002 NATIONAL PIANO SOLO CLASS, DIPLOMA/HONOURS
Own choice, one movement of a sonata or concerto/concerted work. Orchestral part to be played on a second piano. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations. This is the only piano class eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial level.

(N)CLASS 0003 NATIONAL STRING SOLO CLASS, DIPLOMA/HONOURS
Own choice, one movement of a concerto/concerted work. Specify instrument on the entry form. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations. This is the only string class eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial level.

(N)CLASS 0004 NATIONAL CLASSICAL GUITAR SOLO CLASS, DIPLOMA/HONOURS
Own choice, one senior or advanced work. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations. This is the only guitar class eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial level.

(N)CLASS 0005 NATIONAL WOODWIND SOLO CLASS, DIPLOMA/HONOURS
Own choice, one movement from a concerto/concerted work. Specify instrument on the entry form. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations. This is the only woodwind class eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial level.

(N)CLASS 0006 NATIONAL BRASS SOLO CLASS, DIPLOMA/HONOURS
Own choice, one movement from a concerto/concerted work. Specify instrument on the entry form. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations. This is the only brass class eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial level.

(N)CLASS 0007 NATIONAL PERCUSSION SOLO CLASS, DIPLOMA/HONOURS
Own choice, one movement of a multi-movement work. Specify instrument(s) on the entry form. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations. This is the only percussion class eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial level.

(N)CLASS 0008 NATIONAL CHAMBER CLASS,
DIPLOMA/HONOURS 
Own choice, one movement of one selection. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations. This is the only chamber class eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial level.

(N)CLASS 0009 NATIONAL MUSICAL THEATRE SOLO CLASS, GRADE A/HONOURS
Own choice, two selections from musicals, one ballad and one up-tempo, original key, gender/type appropriate, with spoken passages allowed only if published in the music. May use costumes, 1 hand prop and stage movement. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations. This is the only musical theatre class eligible for recommendation to the National class at the Provincial level.


NATIONAL COMMUNITY CHORAL CLASSES

COMMUNITY CHOIR

(N)CLASS 0100 – THE HONOURABLE BARBARA A. HAGERMAN
The Honourable Barbara A. Hagerman Plaque and Award shall be given for the best performance by a community choral group of 13 or more singers, the majority of whom are 19 years and over. Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts. Only one of the selections may be a folk song. Brief solo passages are allowed.  Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.

(N)CLASS 0102 – GEORGE S. MATHIESON
The George S. Mathieson Plaque and Award shall be given for the best performance by a community choral group of 13 or more singers, aged 19 years and under as of December 31 prior to the National Festival. Five percent (5%) of the choir membership may exceed the specified age limit by no more than two (2) years. Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts. Only one of the two selections may be a folksong. Brief solo passages are allowed.  Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.

(N)CLASS 0105 – DR. & MRS. J.F.K. ENGLISH
The Dr. & Mrs. J.F.K. English Plaque and Award shall be given for the best performance by a community choral group of 13 or more singers, aged 16 years and under as of December 31 prior to the National Festival.  Five percent (5%) of the choir membership may exceed the specified age limit by no more than two (2) years.  Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts.  Only one of the two selections may be a folksong.  Brief solo passages are allowed.  Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.

(N)CLASS 0107 – MARGARET WHARTON MEMORIAL
The Margaret Wharton Memorial Plaque and Award shall be given for the best performance by a community choral group of 13 or more singers, aged 12 years and under as of December 31 prior to the National Festival.  Five percent (5%) of the choir membership may exceed the specified age limit by no more than two (2) years. Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in two or more parts.  Only one of the two selections may be a folksong.  Brief solo passages are allowed. Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.

(N)CLASS 0109 – BARBARA CLARK
The Barbara Clark plaque and award shall be given for the best performance by a community choral group of 13 or more singers, aged 25 or under as of December 31 prior to the National Festival. Five percent (5%) of the choir membership may exceed the specified age limit by no more than two (2) years. Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts. Only one of the selections may be a folksong. Brief solo passages are allowed.  Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.

 

ENSEMBLE

(N)CLASS 0104 – RICHARD W. COOKE
The Richard W. Cooke Plaque and Award shall be given for the best performance by a community or school ensemble of 8 to 12 singers with no age limitations. Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts and one of which must be a madrigal. Brief solo passages are allowed. Contemporary madrigals will be accepted.  Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.

MALE CHOIR

(N)CLASS 0101 – CITY OF LINCOLN
The City of Lincoln Plaque and Award shall be given for the best performance by a community or school choral group of 13 or more male singers (unchanged and/or changed voices). Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts.  Only one of the two selections may be a folksong.  Brief solo passages are allowed.  Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.


NATIONAL SCHOOL CHORAL CLASSES

SCHOOL CHOIR

(N)CLASS 0103 – PAUL J. BOURRET
The Paul J. Bourret Plaque and Award shall be given for the best performance by a school choral group of 13 or more singers, from a single school, aged 19 and under as of December 31 prior to the National Festival. Five percent (5%) of the choir membership may exceed the specified age limit by no more than two (2) years. Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in three or more parts. Only one of the two selections may be a folksong. Brief solo passages are allowed.  Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.

(N)CLASS 0106 – DAVID OUCHTERLONY
The David Ouchterlony Plaque and Award shall be given for the best performance by a school choral group of 13 or more singers, aged 16 and under as of December 31 prior to the National Festival, from a single school.  Five percent (5%) of the choir membership may exceed the specified age limit by no more than two (2) years.  Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in two or more parts.  Only one of the two selections may be a folksong.  Brief solo passages are allowed.  Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.

(N)CLASS 0108 – FLORINE DESPRÉS
The Florine Després plaque and award shall be given for the best performance by a school choral group of 13 or more singers, aged 12 years and under as of December 31 prior to the National Festival, from a single school.  Five percent (5%) of the choir membership may exceed the specified age limit by no more than two (2) years. Competition is based on the total performance of two contrasting selections, one of which must be sung in two or more parts.  Only one of the two selections may be a folksong.  Brief solo passages are allowed.  Please refer to the National Syllabus for regulations.

ENSEMBLE
